'Down Yonder in Dacula' is an oral history of Dacula Georgia between 1905 and 2005 as told by its residents. The project was commissioned by the Dacula Centennial Commission through a Grant of the Georgia Council on the Humanities and appropriations by the Georgia General Assembly
Excalibur was awarded the responsibility to produce the program and to deliver 1000 DVD's . We also produced three sets of DVD's (more than twenty in all) of the raw, unedited interview materials. These have been made available to the Dacula Library and the Counties' Historical Society for research purposes.
The project involved editing more than fourteen hours of video, most of which had already been taken by amateur volunteers, shooting supplementary videos, scanning and adding historic photographs and music. In addition, we contributed photographs and aerial footage showing the current appearance of the Community. These videos contain 107 minutes of program material divided to show key aspects of Community life, including Farming; Religion; Military Service; Music, and Transportation. A section on modern Dacula shows something of the physical changes in the Community over the past hundred years.
The title comes from the 1934 hit record of the same name by Dacula's own Gideon Tanner and his 'Skillet Licker' band. The record sold a million copies in its time! The Skillet Lickers, featured prominently in this DVD, continue today under the direction of Phil Tanner, Gideon Tanner's Grandson.
